The home wind turbine has great potential for creating renewable energy for individual homeowners. Many companies are beginning to design small turbines that are designed to be mounted on the roof of the home rather than on tall, cumbersome towers. It is hoped that these wind turbines will one day be capable of producing most of a home's power requirements.
Currently, a small wind turbine can only produce small amounts of electricity, typically fewer than 1.5 kilowatts. While this amount of electricity can certainly help reduce a home's monthly power bill, it takes a fairly strong, consistent wind to create and maintain that power supply. In locations that are not prone to such winds, these small turbines are less effective.
Now that being said, there is no doubt that future innovations will inevitably create a home wind turbine that can produce higher amounts of electricity with lower wind speeds. It is not inconceivable that someday the majority of homes in this country will have a small wind turbine installed on the roof. Combine these devices with a quality solar power system and a home can be completely free of any connection to the community grid.
