There are a number of different designs of wind turbines out there. However, there are two basic types of wind turbines: horizontal and vertical designs. Horizontal wind turbines are the most commonly used, and the ones most people would recognize. In essence, these are based on the old windmill designs. They are efficient and cost effective.
Vertical wind turbines are still being developed. Part of the purpose behind these turbines is to address some concerns people have had with conventional wind turbines: namely, that they are too loud and pose a danger to flying creatures such as birds and bats. The design varies greatly between these turbines, and they are gradually being picked up for mainstream use.As wind becomes an increasingly popular source of energy, the designs too will continue to evolve. Both vertical and horizontal types of wind turbines promise to feature continued innovation in design and function in the upcoming years.
