Vertical Wind Turbine

Preparing for the future takes a long distance mindset that factor in many different scenarios and possibilities. While many people are preparing for worst doom and gloom possible, from financial collapse to outright anarchy, most people are looking at ways to lower their impact on the planet, have more free time and get more from less. More from less isn't looked at in the same way a hungry person eyes the dollar menu, but along the lines of sustainability and longevity.

For example, a vertical wind turbine is not a cheap investment, but it has the ability to provide almost free power for the life of contraption which can easily exceed fifty years with minimal maintenance. Investing in windmills, hydro-electric power, and solar panels is much more expensive than simply paying the power bill, but that power was most likely created from burning coal in North America, or nuclear power in Europe, both have a heavy impact on the environment in drastically different ways.

Even if coal were an infinite resource it would still not be a good idea to burn it for any sort power, heat or electricity, due to the carbon that is released into the atmosphere. With nuclear power there is currently no proper way to dispose of spent nuclear fuel which remains radioactive for hundreds of thousands of years. This is not even taking into the account the affect on local rivers which are often used to cool reactors and can change local weather conditions.

The most promising sources for energy at the moment are wind and solar power which when used together along with a battery supply can supply power year round. Not only do these two systems compliment each other in producing power, but they also have a similar life span which with regular maintenance can exceed fifty years. That is a lot of power produced with a one time investment and has the possibility of being upgraded as technology allows.

One of the most promising windmill designs is the vertical wind turbine. Unlike a typical windmill which has rotors or blades arrange on a horizontal axis that is mounted high on a tower or pole, vertical turbines have tall vanes that are connected in a circle to the base of the unit which rotates and consequently generates electricity. The main advantages are that the parts are bigger, making them more robust and strong, there are fewer parts in total, they are much quieter than a horizontal model making them suitable for rooftop mounting, and they can perform equally well in incredibly high or low wind conditions.

Vertical wind turbines are also easier to maintain because all the moving parts are located close to the ground which eliminates the need to climb to the top of the tower. Although they are a bit more expensive than a horizontal model, these windmills can last much longer and work better in more conditions making them an ideal choice for pairing with a photovoltaic system of any size.
