Wind Turbine Gearbox

A wind turbine gearbox is what makes wind power viable even when wind speeds are low. The gearbox operates in much the same way as the gears of a car or bicycle, in that they convert the slower speed of the drive shaft to a much higher RPM for the generator shaft. Without this gearing system, wind energy production would be severely limited.

The wind turbine gearbox is usually one of the heaviest components contained inside a wind-powered generator. For large-scale wind generators, this isn’t as big of a problem due to the sheer size of these machines. However, the gearbox is one of the main obstacles to smaller systems that have to be made as light as possible.

As a means of making these smaller generators lighter in weight and therefore more effective, engineers are experimenting with finding ways around using a wind turbine gearbox. Direct drive systems that can operate at lower speeds would greatly improve the efficiency of these devices, and make them a more viable option for residential applications.
