Wind turbines Texas has the ring of a shoddy TV reality series, but the truth of the matter is that wind power is a big deal in Texas. In fact, Texas is the leading producer of wind power in the United States. The US itself is the leading producer of wind power in the globe, which is an impressive statistic as well. So why is wind so big in Texas?
Well the standard answer is that everything is bigger in Texas. That includes wind turbines. Texas has the largest operating wind farm in the world, although a larger is under construction in Kentucky. They don’t boast the largest individual turbine, but that is because the largest turbine is in excess of 6 megawatts, and the blades on it are too large for transport across land. So the one thing Texas doesn’t have; is the largest individual turbine.
However, there’s a lot to like about wind turbines. Texas has a history of energy money, primarily oil. However, in the last 20 years the oil owners have recognized the need for new forms of energy production, and they embraced wind with a furor. Texas now puts out more than 8,000 megawatts of power, which is more than twice the second place state. They are also leading the way in new construction, with more than 1,000 megawatts being built today.
